Linda,
I agree with you that this technique is dangerous. My longest dysfunctional
latch baby took 4 months to get the baby to finally latch and breastfeed.
And, I believe the bottle nipple on the breast was largely responsible for this
baby's refusal of the breast as there was no other valid reasons in the history
of the mom or baby. But, mom's nipple/areolar units were damaged, and a pump
was not responsible, either, since she hadn't been started on pumping until
we met for her consult in her home on day 5 or thereabouts. This mom's milk
supply was severely affected, but we managed to stimulate it, and she went on to
continue to breastfeed her little girl for at least 13 months (last I spoke
to her was in Feb.).

My question I'd like to pose for discussion, and I hope this is a valid
topic, otherwise, listmoms please let us know and we'll promptly stop the
discussion. But, what are the ethical and legal responsibilities of fellow LCs who are
aware of other LCs who habitually use this dangerous, unethical practice? Do
we have an ethical obligation to report this type of behavior?
