Hi, Coach Smith here again. Putting a standard bottle nipple over mother's
breast is worse than inappropriate - it could be very dangerous.

I was recently called by an attorney who was defending a person who put a
standard nipple on a finger to calm a baby. The baby inhaled the nipple and
died. The person who did this had seen nurses doing something similar and
figured if the nurses did it, it was OK. The person was accused of
deliberately poking the device down the baby's throat and was being charged
with murder.

Product liability is a legal and ethical issue. Whenever a product or device
is used for some purpose other what the manufacturer intended, the user
automatically goes "out on a limb." Bottle nipples were designed to fasten
securely onto feeding bottles.

Please take time to read (or re-read) the chapter on legal and ethical
responsibilities in Core Curriculum for Lactation Consultant Practice
published by Jones & Bartlett www.jbpub.com <http://www.jbpub.com/> and
available from ILCA www.ilca.org <http://www.ilca.org/> .
