"Breast-feeding terms faulted"
Breast-feeding advocates are upset about an amendment in a House bill
mandating that women nurse in a "discreet and modest way."
The women say the wording implies that breast-feeding is an immodest
and sexual act, and not a right to nourish their children.
House Bill 2102 exempts breastfeeeding mothers from obscenity laws.
It passed the House Monday after Rep. Bill Graves, R-Oklahoma City,
added an amendment requiring mothers to cover their breasts while
nursing.
"I think it is a bunch of feminists who want it where they can let it
all hang out," Graves said Tuesday. "I think we ought to do things
in a modest way. There's no problem covering it up with a blanket."
However, advocates say the wording could open the door to harrassment
and discourage women from nursing.
