I asked Frank Nice about sam-e not long ago. This is his reply:
SAM-E is another amino acid used for mood disorders. It seems to have
some
efficacy.
Unfortunately, when this amino acid is broken down, it is broken down
into
homocysteine which has a high correlation with heart disease. How much
homocysteine the baby would get is unknown.
Because of this, I would be wary of using it during breastfeeding. I
would probably suggest a trial of St. John's wort first for mild
depression if she wishes to use a nonprescription drug. If she takes
St.
John's wort, she should monitor her infant for abdominal distress/colic.
Take care. Frank
