I have a client who never got a full supply, so supplements with artificial
milk and her baby is now 4 months old (born 7 weeks prem).
She is now getting information that conflicts with what I have discussed
with her previously:
"She is not 6kgs [13lbs] as yet and the nurse at baby clinic says that
solids can be introduced when she is 6kgs. (at five months or so) She said
that if she were only on breast milk, she would not need to start solids
until 6 months but having formula means that she may need solids sooner."
My assumption was that babies will need solids at a similar time whatever
they are drinking. However I read in one of Maureen Minchin's books (I
think) that early solids were a life saver for babies on prototype
artificial milk in decades gone by. Do you think this is what the nurse is
thinking of? And this passion for going by weight....sigh. What is the
standard here - are artificially fed babies not also starting solids at
about 6 months?
In the meantime, I have discussed signs of readiness for solids with her,
in
the hope that she focuses on the baby's behaviour and reactions, not the
scale OR the calendar.
