I just saw another example of how things were, the USA, before things got so crazy, as far as people's attitude toward breasts. "Hearts of the World" was produced in 1918, by D.W. Griffith, and was the story of a young American couple living in France, and what happens to them, during WWI. The movie depicts the passion between the couple, and also the topic of rape, by soldiers occupying the town. They do all of this without showing more than the ankles of the actresses, getting their point across without offending the most delicate viewer.

Toward the end, when the town's people are hiding in wine cellars and abandoned rooms, they show people huddling together, trying to protect children and the injured. At one point, they focus on a mother, her face fearful and her blouse open, with a baby approximately 10 months old, actively suckling her breast. It was a beautiful picture, a symbol of hope, in the middle of fear. There are quite a few depictions of breastfeeding in silent film, actually, although it was usually an actress, and not a real nursing mother.

Of course, if the same story were told in a film produced today, not much of the love and rape scenes would have been left to the imagination, but there would be no depiction of a baby at its mother's breast. It still baffles me that American attitudes toward the breasts and breastfeeding could have gotten so twisted, in such a short period of time.
