Nikki asks:
" After spending a week working as an LC in a local hospital, I
wonder if
anybody ever sees a normal newborn anymore."

After over 18 years working in OB and as an LC, I am convinced a
normal newborn is a rarity. I have seen only one or two whose
parents came in with a strong birth plan that they were able to
achieve. The only other one was where mom had a home delivery, had
a complication herself and had to be admitted to take care of that.
She brought her baby, refused to have the baby admitted, and nursed
very naturally. Too many others who may come in with the most
natural of intentions either wind up with something that foils the
plans or becomes convinced that they are "nursing that baby too
much-you'll get sore" or "you must get some rest".
