How wonderful it would be if we could all take the time described as
ideal in establishing trust. However, what do you do when you are
the only available LC, you have 18 new moms to see, several of whom
are having problems, several of whom are chomping at the bits to be
discharged (and some of those are the ones with problems), moms are
waiting to come in for an induction until rooms are available so
there is pressure to accomplish discharges ASAP, there are 6 phone
calls waiting to be answered, and someone drops in without an
appoint needing help with nursing? Oh, and you have a meeting you
are expected to attend at 3 PM. On days like these, taking time to
establish a trusting relationship just isn't in the cards!
I kid you not. I have had days like this. Then there are days when
another LC is available and patient census is very low. And the
number of bottlefeeding moms seems to be a constant rather than a
percentage. In other words, the higher the total census, the
smaller the number of bottlefeeders and the lower the censul, the
higher the number of bottlefeeders. It makes no sense, but I have
seen it too many times in my years here. I hate to admit it, but on
the days when there are so many moms, as I am checking the patinet
list to see who I will need to see I almost find myself hoping for a
bottlefeeding mom!

Winnie (1 week until retirement!)
