I have found that there are some women whose cultural background makes them
not want to bf in the first few days. I have thought about this vis-a-vis
being respectful of their culture, but have decided that whether or not
this cultural artifact works well for women in the culture they came from,
it doesn't work here. So I exert all my influence to get them to
breastfeed early and well. Sometimes my inner narrative voice, the one
that tries to maintain an objective view of all I do, tells me I am
railroading them out of their cultural milieu, but I have already decided
that, although this may be true, it is best for the mother and baby who
will be living in this culture ("my" culture) to be empowered to breastfeed
in the strongest way possible.
