As a practicing L&D Nurse for 22 years ,I will tell you that getting a pitocin infusion post delivery is commonplace with most deliveries in the hospital. The only time it is not employed routinely is at the midwife deliveries.
Primips usually get 1 liter of IV fluid with 20 units of pitocin and multips may get 1-2 liters over the course of the early postpartum period with 20 units of pitocin in each liter.
Of course, they were most likely on a pitocin infusion pre-delivery as well, because most women are either induced or augmented with pitocin these days.
