    There is an excellent chapter about the evolutionary significance of
infant crying in the terrific book "Evolutionary Medicine" edited by Wenda
Trevethan, James McKenna and Euclid Smith.
    One interesting fact is that babies all over the world initiate crying
with the same frequency; however the duration of crying depends on where the
baby is living. If it is in the USA, the baby cries for a long time. If it is in
Mexico or some Asian or African country, or Cuba or many other places in the
world, the baby is responded to within 10 seconds of the cry starting.
