To Heather in the UK, this is from Heather in the USA, also known as the
actual sqeezer of the breast in that support group:-)  You wouldn't have had
any way of knowing that, but I think that Claudine's description is what was
lacking here.  I cetainly didn't "walk up to women and squeeze their
nipples!"  I always ask if I can palpate a breast first and am utterly
respectful of women.  There was a Failure to Thrive baby in that group and I
was trying to get a handle on (no pun intended) the mom's supply, as she had
recently been seen by a colleague of mine.  No one batted an eye or felt
uncomfortable--this is a well-established support group run by excellent LC's
;-)  And I certainly didn't squeeze the nipple, or I would be convinced
that no one has any supply, as that generally yields very little.
And Valerie, I'm sorry that you do not use hand expression to HELP determine
supply; I have found it very useful and most of my "gut" knowledge about
supply and capacity for supply has been confirmed and/or gleaned from doing that.
Respectfully,
Heather M. Kelly, MA, IBCLC
