For some reason I only seem to receive (I estimate) half of the lactnet digests each day so am missing out on the initiation of a lot of topics. I did work with one mother who was determined to breastfeed but who had been given a rubber teat to place over her nipple while she was in hospital. Through sheer persistence & hard work on her part she did manage to maintain her milk supply & eventually feed with her baby directly on the breast. It took her 3 months to achieve that and she then continued to enjoy her breastfeeding relationship for another 18 months.
I am sure if the staff working in the postpartum areas were aware of the difficulties & heartache these mothers go through after leaving hospital they would think very carefully before using such 'aids". I thought that this was a technique of the past & am saddened to hear people are still doing it.
Regards,
Christine Choong
