You ask "is it common for abcsesses to be relatively painless and not
preceded by any type of
infection?" It is not common, but possible to have a non-acute type
presentation. An abscess is a walled off infection, so it was indeed
preceded by an infection, just w/o acute symptoms.
Does this mother have diabetes or could she have some type of immune
dysfunction? Is she very anemic or otherwise malnourished? Is she HIV
positive? I think she needs to be thoroughly checked out. She could possibly
benefit from taking some probiotics while she's on antibiotics, esp if she
is prone to candida. Possibly culture the baby too (nasopharynx).
