The vast majority of mom/babies we see on an outpatient basis only
have one visit. Most will also have at least one follow-up phone
call to assess progress. In the past year I think we have only had
a handful that had repeated visits and we see an average of 2-3 per
week (in addition to seeing inpatients and handling phone calls and
support group). If it is just a matter of a follow-up weight, these
are often done in the support group. We discourage moms from using
the group for individual problems other than a quick question or a
"does this latch look OK?", but there is a scale there and most of
the moms like to check the weight each time they come. We don't
make a big deal of it. Moms are taught to do it themselves and
other than showing her how the first time, they do this
individually.
I wish this meant that we have a near-perfect success rate, but
unfortunately, in some of the situations, mom decides to give up
rather than to follow-up. Since we get very good insurance
coverage, it isn't because of cost.
