I don't use any slides or videos in my bf classes. I generally get great
reviews. I just talk, ask, and answer questions. I do give out some
handouts, just a few. I have done classes w/ slides and videos but I find
just engaging the class works much much better. I don't cover the same thing
every class but I focus on the basics: mom and baby togetherness, early bf,
bf on cue, rooming in. I talk about positioning (I do use a doll) and latch
and how to tell the baby is getting it right. In the beginning of class I
ask who is due in December, who is due in Jan, etc. Then I ask if anyone has
children already and were they bf and things come up at that point. I ask
what have you heard that you are worried about or not sure about. Towards
the end I ask what do you feel you really needed to know that I have not yet
covered. Invariably diet questions come up during class and questions about
pumping.
I try to let them see how wonderful bf can be and that it is not rocket
science and I will be there to help and support them. I try to get them on
the right track for the first few days, becoz if not, there will be alot of
premature weaning or giving up. I don't try to cover everything in one
class. I teach as I work with them postpartum.
I am not saying that slides and videos are not useful I just feel I have the
audience's attention and they establish a rapport with me better w/o them.
Good luck with your classes. Have fun.
