I agree with Pam, Anne and others who have spoken about HCPs inspiring Moms
to breastfeed.
Jennifer, I agree that the emotion in the statement by you (there are no cons
to breastfeeding!) may be just what this Mom needed to hear.
Like Pam, I was 24 and pregnant with my first and a NICU nurse when my nurse
midwife told me "Of course you will breastfeed!" This did not *feel*
paternalistic at all as I knew little to nothing about the risks of formula and needed
to feel (as someone else mentioned) that I *could* do it. Her statement met me
exactly where I was in the process!
It reminds me of the 16yo new Mom I saw recently. First baby, day 2 found
her ready to go home bottle feeding after an initial intent to breastfeed but
little success with latch. Met with her reluctance, my statement to her "you
and I are going to put this baby to breast -now" might seem thoughtless or
inappropriate to some and certainly would if taken out of context, but it met her
where she was!
