I often tell my patients who insist to me that their very young infants are
ready for solids because they have "food envy" and put everything in their
mouths that if these were the only things to consider we could just as
easily say that at 4 mos my daughter was ready to eat carpet fuzz and
kleenex, because that is what she went out of her way to get in her mouth.
Usually parents then laugh and we go on to talk about why we might want to wait.
My own silly dd who seemed so ready to start solids pretty much refuses them
now that she is past 6 mos and we are offering them. She still sure acts
like she wants to get a hold of our food, but when offered some, she rarely
takes more than a bite, if that. Her growth remains excellent, though, so
we aren't concerned.
