I'm a LLLLeader fairly new to Lactnet. I nursed my oldest daughter, Ruby,
exclusively for 11-1/2 mos, when she decided that she wanted to try food!
She's been meat (no beef, poultry or pork), fish, egg and dairy-free from
the beginning. She has no known food allergies. She nursed all the way
through my pregnancy with my second daughter and weaned by her own choice at
3 yrs, 5 mos. My second daughter, LilahRose, nursed exclusively for 9
months. Again, when *she* decided to try food, not at my urging. She,
also, ate no meat, fish, eggs or dairy for her first 3+ yrs. No known
allergies. She now eats fish and chicken, just since a year ago - she's now
4. She weaned on her own at 2-/12 yrs when I was pregnant with my last
daughter. My youngest, Isabella, nursed exlusively for 11 months, again,
her decision. She eats no beef, pork or dairy. She's now 17 mos old. I am
dairy-free, and do not eat beef or pork.
Ruby saw a pediatrician who was horrified that she hadn't eaten solids yet.
LilahRose never saw a pediatrician, so I didn't have to listen to the
admonishment. Isabella's pediatrician saw her at 10 months, and was equally
horrified that she wasn't on '3 meals a day'. She advised me that if she
didn't start eating 3 meals a day, she'd 'never learn to like anything but
breastmilk and mushy foods'...and that she wouldn't 'gain enough weight' on
that 'type' of diet...
Isabella started solids within a month of her 1st birthday. She eats
everything, and hasn't found anything she doesn't like. When we saw the
pediatrician at 13 mos, she immediately asked me *what* she was eating.
When I gave her the list of foods she was eating, she seemed to ease up a
little. She was not as concerned about Isabella only being in the 5th
percentile for weight...BUT, had she still been exclusively nursing AND in
the 5th percentile, I would have gotten a lecture...(all of my children are
small in stature and have never had antibiotics)
None of my girls have anemia, food sensitivities or allergies, and they all
are much healthier than their peers. They get one or two colds a year,
nothing that requires visits to the doc.
My husband and I felt that when they were ready for food, they would let us
know. I just wish that more Mothers had faith that their milk could sustain
their babies for longer than the *magical* number of 6 months. When/who
decided that nursing to 6 months was all that was necessary???
Hope this is helpful to you.
Happy New Year!
Joi
