Hi, Lynn: I would be interested in knowing what pacifier use looks like,
especially with baby Anna. Two babies I worked with years ago still stick
in my mind because weight gain dramatically improved just by getting rid of
the pacifier. One mom was self-referred because baby was making her crazy
getting up at 5 AM every day. He was chugging along with barely adequate
weight gain, took a 5 hour nap every afternoon and pretty heavily used a
pacifier - mom would give it to him at 5AM instead of nursing. My initial
recommendations were to break up his long afternoon nap and feed and when
he woke up at 5AM to nurse instead of giving him the pacifier. She called
me back the next day amazed that he didn't even wake up at 5AM! When she
took baby in for a weight check a week or so later he was gaining better
than an ounce/day, and continued doing well. It was a similar scenario
with the other baby. To this day, I always get a pacifier history when
dealing with slow weight gain.
