The growth rates and weight/age, weight/height, and BMI of infants and
children depends on many things, including nutritional factors, genetic
factors, disease factors, emotional factors, etc.
Sometimes fat babies are that way because of their genetic predisposition,
and there is nothing you can do affect their genes.
Fat babies may become fat toddlers, and continue to be fat children, and
grow up to be fat adults. We can do our best to teach them to make healthy
food choices and to get lots of physical activity. But you can't change
their genes.
Kathy Dettwyler, who is 5'8" tall, weighs 200 pounds, and comes from a long
line of large, fat people, and whose youngest Alex was 9 lb. 1 oz. at birth,
30 pounds at one year, 60 pounds at 4 years, and is now 160 pounds at 12
years. At 5'6", he is also very tall for a 12 year old, has HUGE hands and
feet, very broad shoulders, and is still growing upwards at a remarkable
rate. All three of my kids are the same height now, even though my daughter
is 23, my son with Down Syndrome is 18, and my youngest son is 12.
