Belated thanks for your post about Erb's palsy.  Your post lead to a
discussion
about this with my mother as my brother had Erb's palsy.  My mum, who had
previously had large supply, weaned my brother at 9 weeks for lack of weight
gain.  She found this to be quite a shock as a test weigh in hospital showed
a transfer of 150ml.  Mum had a real lightbulb moment at
your mention of a disorganised suck.  She said that summed up how it was.
We discussed how a disorganised suck could have lead to insufficient supply
and that the initial good transfers and weight gain were a result of her
good supply.

Mum is much consoled by this and is very relieved that she can now see his
weaning was
not her "fault".  She had been told by many people she was just doing too
much to keep up her supply and felt very guilty about it.

Although my mum was told that my brother had no pain she was also told not
to hold him (apart from to feed).  The surgeon recommended pinning the
sleeve of the injured arm to his nightie so the arm didn't flap about.  The
physio quietly suggested pinning the
good arm at times instead and encouraging the injured arm.  Mum listened to
the
physio.

Mum is convinced that he was in severe pain.  The extended family accepted
he was in pain for around 9 months.  He stopped favouring the arm while
crawling when he was 9 mths.  He apparently spent a lot of his early life
screaming.  Thirty four years later and Mum is still angry about the lack of
acknowledgment/acceptance/belief in the pain.
