Rachel asked about whether taping an SNS tube parallel to the tongue. would
place the tube in the corner of the baby's mouth. The Medella instructions
have the tube perpendicular to the tongue - and that puts it into the
corner of the mouth. If you have the baby in the transition hold on a flat
bed pillow this would mean that:

Medella instructions: Tube would be perpendicular to the floor.
My former supervisors instructions: Parallel to the floor.

If you have the baby in a cradle or other slanting position:

Medella instructions :The tube would be pointing diagonally downward
towards the nipple.
My former supervisor's instructions, the tube would be pointing diagonally
upwards towards the nipple.

---- or --- if you think about the baby's lips

Medella instructions: The tube would be parallel to the lips going into
the corner of the mouth.
My former supervisor's instructions, the tube would be perpendicular to the
lips, going under the tongue.

Hope that helps. Too bad I can't figure out how to do a diagram on email.
Even so, sometimes sleepy moms have a way of inventing their own ways of
doing it. I had one mom tape the tube several inches above the nipple -
with the end hanging in the air. She couldn't figure out how to get it in
the baby's mouth EVEN AFTER showing her, showing her the diagram and
talking her through it.

Best, Susan
