The arrival of formula on the doorstep of mothers who have just had a baby is
a clever bit of marketing to make sure that a sample of the product finds its
way into the hand of a potential customer. Four days after my second
granddaughter was born $28 worth of formula and coupons landed on my daughter's front
porch. All births in the US are a matter of public record and can easily be
accessed from any birth registry in any city. Since my daughter had not signed
up for any formula clubs, bought maternity clothes under her name or any other
purchase route, the only other entities that knew of this birth were the
hospital, my daughter's midwife's office, the insurance company, the social
security office because the birth certificate forms have a place to check off if you
want a social security number for the baby, and me (and I didn't tell!).
