Hello all,

I am brand new to Lactnet. I work as a lactation consultant in a hospital setting about 50 miles west of Chicago, Illinois, USA. I am finding the reading fascinating, (though the volume of the mail is a bit daunting) and have already filed away several bits of information for future reference.

I wanted to comment on the subject of the large infants. I have had occasion to deal with the opposite problem, both in my practice and personally with one of my own exclusively breastfed children, where the infant was deemed underweight and of course formula supplementation was prescribed to correct the "problem." When this scenario comes up I usually encourage the mother to take note of all of the babies growth (i.e. length, head circumference) as well as their own body types and those of their partner. I also point out that the growth charts that most pediatricians use in our area are based on the typical growth patterns of formula fed infants and cannot be relied upon to accurately predict the growth of a breastfed baby.

I am looking forward to continued expansion of my breastfeeding horizons.

Stacy Miller-Leonard RN, MS, IBCLC
