Just a few things...

The mother in question (who is nursing a baby) and I are in total
agreement. She will attend, because she's been given permission to do
so, and she will nurse as she always does. If there is an issue, we will
deal with that at that time. We won't bring up nursing until there is
an issue.

I am the leader, the mom is a homeschooling mom (we homeschool too, 5 of
the 6 girls in our troop homeschool) and the mom breastfeeds at our
meetings without any problems at all. Tagalongs are welcome as well,
but this baby is the only tagalong at this time (until last year, my
youngest was a tagalong!) I, personally, would NEVER (and have never)
asked a mom to leave a baby behind. I have, however, for a few trips,
suggested strongly that younger siblings not attend because it wasn't
appropriate. For instance, when we feed the homeless, 1st year Brownies
and tagalongs are not to attend unless they have a parent just for
them--it's not a situation where you want an immature child not
listening, my own youngest child doesn't attend.

The event in question is not a meeting, where I have some control and
can ignore rules with which I do not agree. Instead, it is a service
unit event where many troops come together, and the rules are beyond my
control. I dislike how the girl scouts are not family friendly and
within my own troop I can try to circumvent that a bit, but when it
comes to events where there are other troops--it becomes a bit harder.

>Reading about the issue of moms breastfeeding at Girl Scout meetings is interesting to me, as it very much defines how our culture impacts such normal aspects of life. I am a Girl Scout co-Leader of a homeschooled troop. Every single child in the group (my dd is 11) has been breastfed herself for many years and almost every one has a younger sibling who was also bf for years or is currently nursing (including my 5yr old ds). While we are aware of the guidelines about siblings, we simply do not live within a paradigm that separates mothers from young children and it just would never come up. Our girls would surely have no difficulty with a badge that educates about normal infant care!
