ACtually, my impression is that the formula industry is seriously
concerned about their future for the first time since I've been writing
about this issue. As Dr. Gartner explained to me, they have positioned
themselves as a growth/consumer industry rather than as a medical
products industry, which means that they have to keep gaining a growing
customer base each year in order to make their current shareholders
happy.
But **IF** the DHHS ad campaign is implemented with the radical, new
"not breastfeeding is worse" message as opposed to the
now-nearly-meaningless-due-to-overuse "breastfeeding is better"
message, and if it's implemented on the scale originally planned, the
formula companies will experience sales losses. At that point, their
ads and freebies and courtship of the medical profession will become
much bolder than we have ever seen previously in this coutry.
I really do think that what's happening now with this issue is akin to
what was happening with the tobacco industry/anti-smoking movement
about ten or fifteen years ago.
