Pregnancy is more of a metabolic strain than breastfeeding is. If this
mom can nurture her fetus, she can certainly breastfeed. I saw a mom in
my practice a few years ago who had a gastric bypass, and her infant did
well. One of my sisters is a Registered Dietician and works as a
clinical nutritionist, and she gave me some good advice for this mom
about making every mouthful count, maximizing protein and fat intake to
preserve moms' muscle mass and fat soluble vitamins, and ensuring her
calcium status by minimizing excess sodium in her diet. I strongly
recommend the IBCLC/RD co-management in a case of gastric bypass.
