Darrilyn,
I once met a (new) grandmother at work who, after
listening in on the consultation with her daughter,
had an interesting history: she had breastfed all four
of her children, and with *all* of them she had had
pain and cracked, bleeding nipples but went on to
nurse for 3-4 months with each one, regardless. After
first telling her that I thought she deserved a medal
for perseverance (!!), I asked her how the babies had
done--any trouble with weight gain? She laughed aloud
and said "They were all so big the doctor once asked
me if I was giving them extra formula! He couldn't
believe babies would get so fat on my milk alone!"
She was clearly very proud of this and I thought it
was a great story.
This grandma had a lot of questions about my emphasis
on correct latch and its benefits. I try to impress
on moms that an effective latch means comfortable
feedings, no nipple damage, and *better emptying of
the breast which leads to greater supply*. After
talking about the grandmother's experiences, we agreed
that she, like Darrilyn's lady, probably had a large
supply and a vigorous MER and her babies "thrived on
the runoff", despite ongoing nipple trauma.
