What I find most interesting and also very sad is that this frequently isn't a matter of HPs "wresting" control from women. Rather it is a matter of often otherwise intelligent women handing control over to HPs -- and handing it to them with gratitude as several on this list have documented via various cases.
Equally unfortunate, most HCP's aren't insisting on placing that control and responsibility back where it belongs....with the patient. On the whole, even though it appears that high tech/high intervention is what the public wants I feel that a large percentage of public would feel differently if their HCP placed responsibility on them to decide and saw to it that before doing so the patient was fully informed. I think there would be a whole lot less suing going on if this were done. To a large extent, by being so paternalistic the medical community has brought the lawsuit epidemic on themselves.
