When I teach breastfeeding class, my participants are very eager to hear about how to avoid the problems they have heard about from friends relatives, etc. I usually begin by talking about epidurals and the effects they can have on infant behavior after birth. I do not say "don't have an epidural," but tell them that every intervention has risks. It's their job then to weight the risks vs. the benefits and make their own decisions. I now see families after birth that attended my class and they will tell me things like, "I tried to go natural, but then I couldn't take it. I see what you mean about how it effects our baby, though. We can't get him/her to wake up to feed." We then talk about how to get through the setbacks they are experiencing. I definitely believe in planting seeds in people. We have so much work to do, though. I have other friends who believe only in scheduled c/sections as they are afraid vaginal birth will mess up their sex life!?
