Hi Jennifer,
It's my opinion that breastfeeding support is essential for women to be able
to breastfeed. Therefore I think that along with evaluating attachment at
the breast etc evaluating her support network for breastfeeding should be
routine. Ask her "Do you have a support network for BF? Who is your support
network?" If she comes up with nil then say "Do you want to breastfeed? "
and presuming the answer is yes then you can tell her that she NEEDS a
support network and help her evaluate how she might build one. Lay
breastfeeding support groups can come into that of course as a convenient
place to access people who will support (can also talk about how she might
let significant others in her life eg mother, partner know that she needs
their support).
