Dear Lactnetters,
I'm unsure what to tell a Mom. This mom has been in the ICU on a
nipride drip for almost 48 hours. I know the Mom should not breastfeed while on
the medication, but my question is how long after the medication is stopped can
she begin breastfeeding?
I searched the archives and the most recent information on nipride is
the years 97-98. Our pharmicists at the hospital stated that she should not
breastfeed for 3-7 days or even up to 42 days because it is 6 times the half
life of the drug. What!!!!! I then proceeded to ask how we can test if she is
therapeutic to breastfeed? I checked with lab and they stated that she can
have her blood tested for cyanide (thiocyanate)--which would take up to 2 days.

I would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you.
