It seems that Brands X, Y and Z are stepping up their efforts for a bigger
share of the 'market', through outright advertising adjacent to articles
about breastfeeding as a tiresome, uncomfortable ordeal in media directed at
new mothers. See Alice Ernest's post on American Baby magazine from earlier
today.
I can't believe this is coincidental; it makes me more and more sure that
the industry has known about the ad campaign long enough to plan a
counter-campaign, and the whole tactic of using the head of the AAP to stall
things with DHHS was more a ploy to gain time. It was a gamble, too - they
couldn't have been absolutely sure Carden Johnston would topple in their
favor, could they? (Or maybe they could? Maybe his candidacy for head of
the AAP was also an industry ploy; stranger things have happened.)
However it happened, now THEY are on the offensive and the Real Campaign
will be on the defensive. The formula manufacturers must be rubbing their
hands together in glee and snickering all the way to the bank. It is
sickening.
