I was told many years ago that the idea that breastmilk is inadequate
after one year began during the days of wet nursing when people found
babies did best when the wet nurse had a baby roughly the same age as
the one she was wet nursing. Newborns who were nursed by women with
toddlers did not seem to do as well. Therefore, the idea sprang up that
somehow the milk of a woman with an older baby was "inadequate." We
know now that the milk changes over time to meet the changing needs of
the baby. But this is a far cry from being "inadequate." But old
outdated ideas die hard!
How many times have you found yourself trying to change someone's mind
when all they know is "Well, that's what they say." I always ask who
"they" are, but so far, no one has been able to identify them! Odd that
we're so willing to take advice from someone we can't even identify!
