The original, inflammatory phrase was "Unfortunately, one of the
richest sources of trans in the Canadian food supply is mothers' milk,"
by Prof. Holub.

Without seeing the data, I am skeptical on the logical basis that (a)
breastmilk fat reflects dietary fat; therefore (b) breastmilk fat would
have as much trans fat as the average intake of any sampled mother.
Not more. And certainly not more than the highest source in her diet.

For example, if this mom only ate hydrogenated shortening, and nothing
else, her breastmilk trans fat level should be nearly as high as the
trans fat in the shortening (not as high, unless she had been eating
this way long enough to affect all her body stores). However, if she
ate a mixed diet, it should be substantially less.

Again, without being privy to the actual data, I don't see how her
breastmilk could be a "richer" source of trans than any food she eats,
since she doesn't contribute any trans fats herself. And there is no
reason to believe that trans would be overrepresented in her milk,
compared to all the other fats she eats. The data I have seen
indicates that breastmilk fat reflects the overall maternal diet, and
certainly not that certain fats are selectively included and others
excluded.

Therefore, in a mixed diet, there would be many richer sources of trans
fat than she will ultimately pass on in her breastmilk.
