I was shocked with tonight's episode. A good shocked. Dr. Carter is in
Africa still. He was treating an HIV positive pregnant woman. He goes off
telling her she can't breastfeed the baby. They will give her formula--he made
some comment how great formula was. There was another doctor there who I
know was feeling as I was. She proceeds to tell him that the formula they
receive from UNICEF is powdered and that the mom is in a refugee camp and the
water would not be safe. He counters with let's get bottled water, and she says
for 8 feeds a day for a year! She then says that the baby would probably get
(die?) of cholera--can't remember what else--she gave the percentage of how
likely that would be---high. She then said that the chance of mom passing the
HIV thru her milk was a 3% benefit! Who was working on this one?!

Aloha,
Gloria Thai
