Dear Dr. Gordon,
Please share this with the mother you are working with. Her problems
*might* have nothing to do with hormones. Years ago, I would be laid up for
days (up to two weeks, sometimes) with severe pain, nausea, diarrhea. I
brought the matter up to my primary care physician, who asked me what type of
vitamin supplements I was taking. He discovered that my usual daily supplement
contained minerals as well as vitamins. He explained that one of the trace
minerals (I think selenium, but we are talking many years ago and I may not be
remembering correctly) causes muscle cramping. He suggested I take the
vitamin/mineral supplement from day 3 of my period until 2 weeks before my period. At 2
weeks before, switch to a vitamin-only supplement. It was a little tricky,
because I was so irregular I didn't know when "two weeks" was. But when I
managed to get at least 10 days (or up to 3 weeks) of no mineral supplement, I
breezed through the cycle while if I only got 3 days of "no minerals" because that
particular cycle was short, I was fairly miserable that month.
The mother you are working with may not be taking mineral supplements,
so this may have no effect for her. But it was like a miracle for me.
