I, too, get frustrated with the amount of formula babies take and
how it can discourage a breastfeeding mom. When a nursing baby is
given a bottle or a bottle even shows up in the room (whether for a
valid medical reason or it is going to happen regardless of what I
may recommend) mom will often comment (and I think usually think),
"Wow, I know I don't have that much in my breasts!" I try to
comment as often as I can that most of what's in the 3 or 4 ounce
ready-to-feed bottles gets tossed out in the immediate newborn
period.
When discussing why it's best to give baby only mom in the mouth at
least the first month, I like to turn a bottle upside down and let
them see how the milk (actually I use water-cleaner) dribbles out.
I point out that when this happens in a baby's mouth, he has no
choice but to swallow it. I think sometimes the suck-swallow
sequence then gets "triggered" and baby keeps taking it until he
just can't handle any more and will frequently "give mom a refund" a
little later. Then the next time he goes to breast, he may be
frustrated, confused (or whatever) by the difference in feel,
immediate stimulation of the "s-spot", action, immediate flow, etc.
Any one or any combination of the differences can be a point of
confusion for any given baby.

Winnie
