As a doula, I always recommend to families to write a birth plan. I also
encourage them to pick out their most important issues and list them simply.
HCP's and nurses tend to joke at birth plans that read like a novel. I
suggest listing 5-6 requests on one page. I do think people need to write a
birth plan and a baby care plan that includes information about
breastfeeding for example.

We know that how a woman birth matters. If a woman feels powerless and has
interventions that she didn't expect..for whatever reason, she MAY come away
from her birth to some degree with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This will
definitely impact how she parents and how she feel about herself as a
mother. I have LOTS of families that hire me for the second birth because
the first was not a happy one. This is a great dichotomy, you have a healthy
beautiful baby..but the birth itself was often damaging either physically,
emotionally or both.

We know that how a woman birth matters, if she has support...feels cared for
even if she has unexpected interventions.....she often views her birth as
positive. If she is lucky enough to have the birth she wants then she comes
away empowered. This of course affects how she feels about herself and how
she mothers her baby.
