I need to add my two cents worth. I also hate the phrase, using me as a
pacifier, however, I work with new moms all the time with sleepy babies and
ineffective sucks. So many moms do not know the difference between effective
sucking and the "flutter" suck often interpreted as using mom as a pacifier. It is
important that the baby do enough nutritive sucking to bring in a good milk
supply and to transfer enough milk to grow. Then the non-nutritive sucking has
its purpose also. I often discuss that all babies are different and some have
much greater holding and sucking needs. I also refer to the pacifier as a
mother substitute. We live in a bottle-feeding, "put the baby in a box (crib,
playpen, swing, etc.) society." Babies however were not meant for that kind of
society. They need holding and cuddling and lots of physical contact. I
need to teach moms and dads this because they are brainwashed to believe they are
spoiling babies. My first-born slept in his crib once or twice. He needed
constant contact, frequent feeding, etc. He just turned 21 and is the most
wonderful young man I ever met. (unbiased opinion of course!) I tell parents the
road to an independent and fulfilled adult is meeting their needs when they
are young.
