I also work in a nursing home here and two days ago I had the kitchen send
up a cabbage leaf and put it on a total knee. The resident told me the next
day that it really took the redness out and help with the swelling. I told
the head nurse and she was impressed I will take this list to her.

I'll add to Peggy's list:
in and around casts for swelling from broken bones
on and around sites of operative incisions
swollen joints (such as tennis elbow)
black eyes (around the eye only, not over it!) :-)
reduce inflammation from painful arthritic sites
I use panty hose legs (cut off, of course) to tie the cabbage around a
limb or face.
Karen Z, who is applying cabbage to one of my son's shoulder after an
operation last week--he lets me know when it's time for a change!
