Dear Lactnetters,
I need input/references to support breastfeeding or breastmilk for a baby
who has chronic infantile cholestasis. A formula high in MCT oil has been
advised due to the fat malabsorption of this condition. This pre-digested
formula is advised for optimal nutrition, per the doctor. Please note that
this little one has been breastfeeding beautifully since birth (now 7 weeks
old)and I have been consulted to help mom with "drying up". Weight gain
has not been great (but steady!) - obviously, due to the malabsorption of
fat. Baby was breastfeeding constantly, according to mom. I have worked
with this dyad since birth to establish breastfeeding and know mom has
ample milk supply. BTW - Baby was born with duodenal atresia - repaired
surgically. Any ideas out there? Supplemental nurser with pre-digested
supplement? Limited breastfeeding? Pump and save ebm for later use?
Thanks for all your wonderful advise and input!
