Hi, All: The USA Today article was discussed yesterday at our system-wide
hospital LC quarterly meeting yesterday. Just what we neede to make our
day! I saw a report last evening on ABC national news - the network's
physician consultant (Dr. Tim Johnson) made several comments on
the "findings" and stated very emphatically that he believed a mother
should continue to breastfeed as the benefits of her milk FAR outweighed
any risks of these contaminants. He state that he thought formula was
inferior to human milk in terms of infant nutrition. He put the blame
squarely on the govt environmental agencies for not doing more to removing
these contaminants from the US environment and pointed out that far less of
these toxins are found in the milk of European moms, due to the fact that
European nations have much stricter environmental controls in place. Good
for you, Dr Johnson, in placing the blame where it belongs - on the
environmental protection agency - and not on breastfeeding!
