I'm sure someone has already referred you to the book, Defining Your
Own Success as a great resource.
What I have learned over the years is that you can't predict with
any accuracy what the breastfeeding outcome will be. I've known of
moms who had total nipple removal and reattachment who have gone on
to nurse and others where everything remained attached, nipple
innervation appeared to be intact and mom was even leaking during
pregnancy, but who never were able to develop a milk supply.
I think the most important thing is close follow-up, including
weight checks in the first couple weeks and keeping a diaper diary
until breastfeeding is reestablished. These moms need lots of
support. They may question their previous decision to have the
surgery, even though the reasons may have been very valid. I like
to refer them to the BFAR website as a resource where they can chat
openly with other moms having the same concerns.
