When I do breastfeeding education for prospective doulas, I start with a
short discussion of their feeding experiences with their own babies, so
we can discuss any regrets or guilts they have and reframe them a little
bit. Then we can more objectively talk about the importance of
breastfeeding, and how to help new mothers. Perhaps that can work for
the prospective coalition members, if you first give them positive
reinforcement for their efforts, and recognize that the information and
assistance was just not there when they had their kids.
