What does it mean when a 4 week old baby has thickish green stools (green pudding like)?
Baby has had one BM every 2 days, but had two on Monday due to increased breast milk intake. This baby will latch on ok with a weak suck but will not persist long enough to take in enough milk. Baby rarely wakes for feedings but is slowly getting more alert. Baby tires even on the bottle but mom has been getting enough down baby that weight gain is now excellant. Two pounds over birth weight. We loaned mom an Elite (from WIC) and she is increasing her supply so baby is getting more and more breastmilk. We went to an SNS at the breast which helped. Baby took 48 ml at my visit and then fell asleep and would not rouse up again. Baby is now 8 pounds 2 ounces. Mom has been breastfeeding and then giving 2 oz in a bottle because baby was not gaining weight without the supplements. Supplements have been mostly Enfamil Lipil.
Mom gave me permission to ask about this odd color and texture of BM. I just became involved in this situation on Friday.
Thanks, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
