Dear Kathy,
I took the pediatric boards in oct 2000. There were very few BF Q's(I would
say less than 4 out of ~600). The Q's on Bf are about the same every yr (since
we study from tests derived from previous yrs) They always have to do with
breastmilk composition and comparison to formula, maybe some hormonal prolactin
oxytocin! absolutely nothing about the mechanics of BF, nothing on breast
anatomy or how exactly breastmilk is made! There are some people like Dr Wight
and others of the AAP and ABM who could maybe change that. My best learning
method has always been practice questions (which is why I like doing the LLL
ISM's now and the breastfeedingbasics.org) We also used to have board review
sessions in residency where we went over Q's. When I attend LLL mtgs incognito,
they always excuse MD's misinfo about BF b/c "they only have a 1 hr lecture in
med school" Well that might explain why my dermatologist doesn't know anything,
but it doesn't excuse pediatricians! If I only knew what I learned in Med
school I certainly would not be able to practice medicine! I wouldn'nt have
passed the boards, and even after "passing" the boards, I realize that learning
has to be an ongoing process otherwise you quickly "slip" behind! just my 2c
