Marsha, how big is this group?  Did their babies truly have the dx of
kernicterus?  Were there other contributing factors to this dx such as a positive
PKU?
I ask these questions because with the current screening in the hospital how
does a baby under the observation of the staff develop kernicterus in the
first 4 days of life?
This medication sounds very scary.  Again used at the appropriate time for a
very at risk baby could be helpful but not before age 5 days old.
What happened to the research on the importance that some elevation of
bilirubin plays in the infant?  If these drastic measures are implemented the
assumption that all elevations are abnormal and that is not true.
Once again, the LC will look like the radical to encourage more breastfeeding
for the treatment of normal elevated bilirubin.  SIGH  :-(
