Winnie makes an interesting point about giving a baby a gloved knuckle
to suck to pacify and purposely not allowing the finger to the junction
of the hard and soft palate. I have always used the finger pad side up
and deep in the mouth, to model for the baby where the breast should
go. I also cue the baby to take the finger- tickle above the upper lip
for them to open (which is where I have mom present her nipple), then
encourage them to pull the finger in with the tongue.
I'm going to have to experiment with Winnie's technique, and see what I
find.
